After 11 years of dedicated service with Living Well Disability Services’ Highview and Mary Adele homes, staff, people supported, family members, and colleagues recently gathered to celebrate the retirement of Elizabeth Oboh as she prepares for an exciting new chapter in Illinois.
The celebration was filled with laughter, tears, heartfelt memories, and countless stories about the difference Elizabeth has made in the lives of so many people during her time at Living Well. For many, Elizabeth was much more than a coworker.
“I miss you. You acted like a mother that was here with us,” Martin Amadi shared during the gathering. “You gave us all the support. I wish you the best.”
Others reflected on Elizabeth’s unwavering presence during life’s most challenging moments. Mercy Igbinewka recalled the difficult days surrounding the loss of a person supported and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. “You were always there during times of need,” he said. “With all the good work you have done for these guys, it’s truly a blessing. God bless you. I wish you a happy retirement and good health.”
Throughout the celebration, a common theme emerged: Elizabeth’s kindness, patience, and ability to make people feel valued. Several staff members spoke about how she helped them learn and grow in their careers. Olivia Burns reflected on joining Living Well and how Elizabeth always took time to answer questions and provide guidance. Olivia said, “You helped me learn so much. You helped me become confident in this house, and I’ve seen how much you mean to everyone here. We will miss you so much.”
House Nurse, Elizabeth Barlow, added, “You are one of the greatest people I’ve worked with. We’re going to miss you. Take care of yourself and enjoy your retirement.”
For some, Elizabeth’s departure is especially difficult because of the deep relationships she built over the years. Esther Kumah-Danso shared through tears, “She’s like my mom, my second mom,” Adding, “She’s been there when I’m down. She and her husband have always been there for me. It’s hard to let go.”
Perhaps no one summed up Elizabeth’s impact more powerfully than Elizabeth herself when reflecting on her years at Living Well. “We are like family,” she said. “Not because we work here, but because we care for one another. The staff, the guys, everybody. We support each other, we work together as a team, and that’s what makes this house special.”
Elizabeth spoke lovingly about the people she supported over the years, recalling individuals who became like sons and family members to her. She shared stories of helping them through difficult moments, celebrating their successes, and providing care with her whole heart. “If you take care of people with the whole of your heart, you are indirectly helping yourself,” she said. “Whatsoever you wish others to do for you, do it for them.”
As the party came to a close, attendees reflected on the legacy Elizabeth leaves behind. Her dedication, generosity, compassion, and genuine love for others have touched countless lives and helped shape the culture of care that defines Living Well.
While Elizabeth may be retiring and moving to Illinois, the lessons she shared, the people she mentored, and the relationships she built will continue to have an impact for years to come.
On behalf of everyone at Living Well, thank you, Elizabeth, for 11 years of service, leadership, and love. We wish you and your husband happiness, adventure, good health, and many wonderful memories in retirement.
You will always be part of the Living Well family.
