Our DSP for this week is Joy, and she works at our Westchester home in Golden Valley. She has been with Living Well over a year now and spends a couple days a week helping the folks who live there to thrive. Joy enjoys work and even brought her son to a picnic at the home. After meeting one of the women there, her son and the woman immediately bonded, and she began to call him her grandson.

Fathia Djama, Program Manager, says “Joy is a very attentive and trustworthy staff. She pays close attention to the ladies and takes them seriously, whether they are reporting a concern or sharing good news. Joy is also a great team player. Even though she only works two days a week, she stays involved and engaged, and it often feels like she contributes much more than that.”

Denise, who has lived at Westchester since 2017 says, “Even though I snap at her sometimes, she is patient and caring, and she’s a heck of a cook!”

Joy, you are a busy working mom, and we are grateful you make time for the crew at Westchester. We appreciate you!

ABOUT JOY

Number of years/months with Living Well: 1 year 3 months

Hobbies/Interests: I enjoy reading, swimming, learning new skills, and sewing.

Education: I am currently in college pursuing a degree in Business Administration.

Job Experience/History: I have worked several years in the health care field as a caregiver and an admin. I have worked with people living with TBI’s, those living with autism, the elderly and those living with various developmental and mental health challenges.

Favorite part of the job: Knowing that my presence makes a difference.

Favorite or craziest work story: I once took my son for a 4th of July picnic that my workplace hosted. It was such a thrill to see how he bonded with one of the elderly women, calling her grandma. She asked about her ‘grandson’ every time I worked with her.

What is your motivation for coming to work: It is a deeply rewarding role that makes a tangible difference in the lives of those served every day. Knowing that a person served will seek me out when they need guidance is truly humbling.

What made you apply: I value human connections and know the importance of advocating for vulnerable populations.

What makes you stay: Every day is unique and I get to learn a lot through interaction with people served as well as my coworkers.

What would you tell people interested in joining the team: It’s wonderful to be part of this great team, so why not join us!!

When not at work what do you like to do for fun: Hang out with my son and stay active.

Do you volunteer in your community or school: Yes
